Discovering Las Alpujarras & Sierra Nevada
Ibex Trex Newsletter
We have had a great spring and wish to thank everyone who came and trekked, sweated and ate cakes with us! We have had individual walkers, couples, groups and 25 walkers from the West Berkshire Ramblers’ Club enjoying guided and self-guided holidays with us.

We have been high up in the Sierra Nevada in the snow and down in the valleys of Las Alpujarras discovering more delights this region has to offer. Wild boar with 5 piglets, scorpions, somber bee orchids, nesting golden eagles and of course the elusive ibex have all been spotted this spring. A little closer to home, under our balcony, we saw 5 swallow fledglings all leave the nest this year.

Santa Rita Fiesta, Narila
A group of our walkers enjoyed the delights of Narila’s annual Santa Rita procession along with the local brass band, loud bangers, beer and tapas and local fiesta specialties of ‘turron’ (almond nougat) and ‘churros’ (deep-fried batter sticks). Santa Rita is the Saint of those in need. She is brought down to the main church in Narila square and there are special services for a couple of weeks before the big fiesta. She is then taken back up to the beautiful little Santa Rita Church at the top of the hill overlooking Narila, by the local people followed by Cadiar brass band and a procession of people. When in the church, it is customary to go in and take a flower from her for good health for the year to come. This part can be a bit manic! Then back down the hill for ’churros’, music and dancing.

This year has also seen us involved with young people committed to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and we have seen our first group through their Gold Award. This involved practice and assessed walking days and camping expeditions as well as lots of sweat, blood and tears. Thank you and well done to all the students who were involved with us and congratulations in completing your Gold Award. We look forward to continuing our work with young people doing their Bronze and Silver Awards throughout the coming months.
